Background/Story:
Prior to 2012, I had been to Pebble twice, the '10 AT&T Pro-Am & US Open. I recall looking at the tree aside Pebble's famed par 3 seventh & wondering if it was the "Lone Cypress" (this is pretty common from what I hear).
I happened to mention this to the driver shuttling me back from Monterey Peninsula CC after the 2nd round of the AT&T Pro-Am. As luck would have it, she was a local & since I was the only one in the car, we took took the long way round.
From MPCC we turned south onto 17 Mile Drive, we passed Cypress Point GC then Crocker Grove where the world's largest & oldest Cypress are rooted. As we rounded the turn, She came into full view & the drives started to pull into the parking lot. "Keep going," I pressed, "I need to get some gear & come back, the light is going to be good tonight."
I spent an hour & a half working the light & various angles that evening. While I wrestled w/my tripod, various filters combinations, lenses & shutter speeds, most simply parked, snapped & took a few minutes to appreciate this natural wonder.
One of my favorite encounters of the evening was w/ Chris O'Donnell the actor. "Didn't you play with Ryo & Rickie two years ago," I asked -- He chuckled at this, most know him from his movies & TV shows.
After a quick chat he was off & I was back to work.
Later that evening, long after the sun had set & I was working through my shots from the day, Christ tweeted his snap.
"Might be my favorite place on earth," he said along with a photo that captured the moment perfectly. (

So do yourself a favor, if you are in the Pebble Beach area, take a few minutes to stop by the Lone Cypress. While she's been perched over the pacific for hundreds of years, there's no guarantee she'll be there tomorrow.
